《太阳照常升起:The Sun Also Rises(英文版)》_精选读书笔记100字

It is my first time to read Hemingway’s book. Once I have heard that if people are too young, they can’t get the meaning of what he wrote. So, I am waiting for the right time to encounter with Hemingway and now it is.

The main clue of the story is a cluster of men with a woman’s love affair. However, I am not quite enjoying the mysterious polyamory. The charming parts of the book are those words used in describing the holiday and natural scenery, especially in the chapters of fishing and the San Fermin fiesta. It calls back all my good memories of Summer holidays and weekends. I love to read the lifestyle they have and what are France and Spain like. It can be said that good meals, cafes and wines make up the day of French. When they arrived in Spain for the fiesta, I felt the enthusiastic mood of Spanish just like the hot summer weather. Everything is so real and vivid.

Look at the characters. The book starts with Cohn, a previous box fighter who ought to be a strong man either in spirit or physically, but he is so weak. He loses his mind and dignity in Love. His love to Brett is crazy and annoying. The unilateral relationship makes him just like an abandoned kid or a wretch. How a bad love makes someone pitiful and hateful. Mike (Michael), the fiancé of Brett, all I remember him is a drunker, a man always loss temper after alcohol. A bankrupt not in possession but also in spirit. Bill is a good friend and a nice fellow. I like the part when bill and Jake went to fishing, just two of them. What a peaceful and joyful moment. All those descriptions about forests, woods and streams showing the bright and fresh colour and smell of summer. Together it creates relaxation atmosphere and shows the face of natural beauty. Jake, the writer of the story, is not Hemingway. He only lives in the story and loves Brett deeply. His love is Platonic and a kind of letting go. How deep his love is that he helped Brett chasing for her love ones. Brett (Lady Ashley), a mysterious woman just like a butterfly, everyone loves its beauty, but no one can catch. The young bull-fighter Romeo who is handsome, energetic, young and heroic. I think no one will not love him. Remember once it described that when he was with Brett, he did not do things for her at any loss to himself. He is in the contrary of Cohn.

It is an interesting thing that when you finished this book, you think you have got some understandings, but you can not exactly tell what it is. Hemingway represents the ‘lost generation’. I think I got a bit lost in the story. As their holiday ends, everyone just backed to their origins. In the last Chapter, Brett and Jake set in the Car with the similar conversation they used to have. Life seems like drawing circles, no matter how long the lines your draw it just ends in the same point and start again. Is this what we called the wheel of life?Everything runs in the same track again and again. It sounds depress and hopeless. Maybe this is what the author wants to express, his anxiety and disappointment about life and himself.

I still remember the waiter in a café said he could not understand why people enjoy bull-fight. Everything in the fiesta is so violent and nonsense. People watch people in danger and even risk their live in it. This is also my question. They are the ‘lost generation’. Remember, Brett always says the word “rotten”, Mike always get drunk, Jake’s infinite emptiness and sorrow…..They don’t know what they are pursuing and live in. They came to Spain for the fiesta and to feel the trilling and excitement of bull-fight, but at last it’s just a cluster of lonely souls. Everything happened just like the fireworks, sparking in a second and soon fall into quiet.

Life sucks, but we still move on.
