Animal Farm is an allegorical novel written by George Orwell. It reflects the author’s thought against totalitarianism, and considered as a masterpiece of Orwell, as well as 1984.
This fairy story took place in a fictitious farm in England where the cattle couldn’t bear the oppression from their human master. Affected by the principles of Animalism put forward by“Old Major”(nickname of an old boar in Manor Farm), the farm animals rose up en masse and expelled their human oppressors in a dramatic rebellion. Under the leadership of two boars, Snowball and Napoleon, the cattle began to build an ideal homeland where all animals are equally treated, well feed, have a decent education and will enjoy their lifetime. After a spell of harmonious and enlightened time, however, power struggle became theme of the leadership gradually, also with privilege. Napoleon out-maneuvered his opponent Snowball and reached the highest post finally. Since then, this Berkshire boar and his followers in management got corruption increasingly and lead an extravagant lifestyle, while other civilian animals lived an impoverished and toiling life. The leaders even broke and willfully distorted the vows given by the revolutionaries, drank, made deals with human to gain luxury goods. At last, shockingly, the boars had learned to walk with two feet like human beings. They degenerated to what they revolted originally. As the cattle back into the miserable condition, maybe even worse, the so-called ideal society for animals ultimately became evil utopia.
An interesting one in this novel is that Orwell chose pig as the leader of animal. The reason I guess may be that the pig is a symbol of greedy. Pig don’t labor to gain food like other cattle animals, its ugly looking indicates the twisted inner mind of the dictator.
G. Orwell once acknowledged that this novel actually insinuates Russian Revolution and Joseph Stalin who is the character archetype of “Napoleon”. He criticizes overcentralization of power, and don’t trust the humanity under totalitarianism. In his work, we can always see the non-humanistic coldness, along with uniformity and obedience in the totalitarian society. His works enlighten us to maintain vigilance towards abusive power, to pursue real democracy, to prevent equality and justice from being merely a slogan and a disguised means of egoists and monocrats.
