Margarete is accompanied by her nephew Sigi, who is intent on ensuring that the ashes of his aunt, now close to death, will be scattered into the sea – in the long wave behind the keel. Martin is traveling with his daughter-in-law Sylva, who had been abandoned by her husband.Sylva also has the long wave in her sights; she is prepared to end her life. Confronted with their elders’ history and hoping for reconciliation, Sylva and Sigi become close. But then Margarete and Martin suddenly disappear from the ship without a trace
